Touting the merits of Taiwan’s robust business environment will be a top priority for Minister without Portfolio Yiin Chii-ming during the latest ROC government-sponsored investment tour of Japan.

Comprising 90 senior officials and business leaders, the Yiin-led delegation will depart Taiwan Nov. 6 for a weeklong visit to the Japanese industrial heartland extending from Greater Osaka to North Kyushu.

Tasked with drumming up additional investment in Taiwan’s key industries, the minister is looking to capitalize on his connections with leading Japanese industrialist in the biotechnology, food manufacturing, metal processing, precision machinery and textile sectors.

“This is the second group Yiin has led to Japan since Taipei and Tokyo inked the investment promotion and protection pact in September,” sources familiar with the matter said. “He is definitely seen by the government as the go-to guy for attracting Japanese investment in Taiwan.”

In addition to touring major Japanese firms, the sources said, the minister will host two business forums aimed at bringing prospective investors up to speed on the opportunities available in Taiwan.

Yiin is expected to return home with at least 10 memorandums of understanding spanning new and existing projects. One of these is believed to involve a Kobe-based R&D center that has made repeated overtures to the Ministry of Economic Affairs concerning the possibility of pursuing opportunities with Taiwan firms.

“Company representatives are ready to sit down and discuss proposals for jointly developing new drugs and medical equipment for the massive mainland Chinese market,” the sources said.

Council for Economic Planning and Development Minister Christina Y. Liu led a similar tour to Tokyo and Osaka in late August that bagged five memorandums covering biotechnology, green energy, securities, semiconductor and real estate development. (JSM)
